Hon. Tjabane Launches “Climate Smart Plots” to Safeguard 5,000 Households
Stadium Area – With scientists warning that the upcoming Super El Niño could trigger severe droughts, rising food prices, and widespread hunger, Hon. Mampho Tjabane has taken bold action to protect families in Stadium Area. Her office has launched the Climate Smart Plots Initiative, a program designed to ensure that 5,000 households can withstand both drought and floods, securing food all year round.
What Makes Climate Smart Plots Different
Drought Resilient – Designed to thrive with minimal water, ensuring food security even in dry spells.
Flood Proof – Raised plots prevent destruction during heavy rains and flash floods.
Year-Round Food Security – Families can grow vegetables and staple crops at home, reducing dependence on volatile market prices.
Already, Hon. Tjabane’s team has begun visiting all 10 branches across Stadium Area, teaching communities how to establish and maintain these plots.
Partnerships for Impact
This initiative is powered by strong collaboration with:
- Mineworkers Development Agency
- SAILERI ( Stadium Area Integrated Livelihoods and Environmental Restoration Initiative)
- Dr. Sam Molete (Mokae Organics )
Together, they are providing:
Training – Communities learn practical, climate-smart farming methods.
Seeds – Distribution of drought-resistant seeds to households.
Monitoring & Support – Continuous evaluation to ensure real, measurable impact.
Inspiring the Next Generation
A unique highlight of the program is the children’s competition running alongside the Climate Smart Plots.
-Young participants are challenged to showcase creativity and commitment to climate-smart farming.
-Those who excel are rewarded with bicycles and other prizes, encouraging them to stay active and engaged.
-This competition ensures that youth are not just observers but active contributors to building resilience in their communities.
By involving children, Hon. Tjabane is planting seeds of responsibility and innovation in the next generation, ensuring that climate-smart practices become a family legacy.
Hon. Tjabane’s Message to the Community
“Our children should not go hungry because of the weather. Super El Niño may come, but hunger will not find us unprepared. This is our fight together, to protect the dignity and stomachs of every family in Stadium Area.”
The initiative aims to reach 5,000 households within two years, ensuring resilience against climate shocks. Hon. Tjabane calls on all community members to welcome the teams and embrace this program as a collective shield against hunger.
